Wedding favors or keepsakes are a wonderful gift to say thank you to your guests for sharing your special day. By taking a familiar object out of context and repacking it in dreamy colours and fanciful trimmings, we come up with original treats that are sure to steal your guests’ hearts.

Origin

The custom of giving favours as a wedding souvenir to celebrate the beginning of the couple’s new life together was born in Italy during the eighth century. In the beginning, this custom was practiced only by the noble families. In the wedding of Victor Emanuel of Savoy to Elena of Montenegro favors of solid silver were given to their 1800 guests. By the end of the 19th century the practice had gained acceptance among all social classes and it was customary for a peasant couple to distribute their almonds in a golden cardboard box.

Today the giving of favors is not restricted to weddings alone but is given to commemorate all kinds of occasions. The favor is filled with different colored almonds to signify each occasion. Pink & blue is used for christenings, red for graduations, green for engagements, white for weddings and silver & gold for 25th & 50th wedding  anniversaries.

African contemporary favours

Though new in our culture, giving of favours has become prevalent and even more exciting noting the variety of fillings and wrappings that are African.

These are some classifications to guide you if you are planning an African themed wedding.

a) Artifact

The type of artifact can be chosen that is African and can be personalized. These can be such as wood carvings, Kisii soap stone, beaded keychains, coasters or glasses.  The variety for use as favours are limitless.

b) Wrapping

At a wedding our senses absorb the details of the day. Keeping to the African theme through the choice of inexpensive yet customized wrapping of the choice favour, be it African or modern can add the touch of African flair. Modern fillings could be candles, chocolate or almonds among others but wrapped in packaging from Kikoy, hyacinth, banana fibre or material with African print.

c) African Generic items

To celebrate the land or cultures represented the favours can be chosen on the basis of their African origin or flavour.  These items are such as coffee, tea, macadamia nuts or cashew nuts.

The trick to making any favours more special is to add something personal that friends and family will be thrilled to receive as little treasures  you have created just for them.
