A few extra tips for the bride
This is where the internet comes in handy so start googling and borrow from a different custom or tradition. One great western one (esp. in North America and the United Kingdom) is to wear something old, something blue, something new and something borrowed on your wedding day. You don’t have to wear 4 different “somethings” you can combine two or three together. Here are a few examples
Something Blue: this can be a blue garter, but you can also add a blue sash or embroidery to your dress if it goes with your colour scheme. Add an African twist and wear blue waist beads (underneath your dress of course) or a blue bead anklet. You can also borrow a blue handkerchief from your mom or relative to make something blue and borrowed.
Something New: This can be your dress, shoes, jewellery or anything else you may choose. You can combine your blue waist beads or anklets to make something new and blue.
Something Borrowed: this usually has a sentimental touch to it as most brides tend to borrow their mom’s, grand mom’s jewellery or that of a close female relative or friend. You can also borrow shoes or a handkerchief as well or if your hire a dress use that as your something borrowed. This “something” can be paired up with old to make something borrowed and old as the items you borrow will usually have been worn before. Whatever you choose to borrow, make sure it completes your desired look for your wedding day.
Something old: remember our blue handkerchief? Well you can add that to the list and make it a borrowed old blue handkerchief and you have 3 “somethings” in one. You can also choose to wear your old shoes if they compliment your gown.
These are just a few examples, there are no rules here be creative and have fun, you can also add a fun fact in your program if appropriate with reference to what your “somethings” are.
